Dublin City Council is encouraging the public to celebrate Halloween safely.

Halloween is a fantastic opportunity for families and communities to come together and celebrate. The huge majority of people celebrate Halloween responsibly and have great fun. In recent years the number of incidents that the emergency services have responded to on Halloween night has also declined as more and more people enjoy Halloween at community events like the ones Dublin City Council supports.
Unfortunately it’s still one of the busiest nights of the year for Dublin Fire Brigade and the Emergency Services.  Remember, all bonfires are illegal and cause destruction and damage in communities. Fireworks are also potentially very dangerous and are only legal when part of a licensed fireworks display.
Have a scary Halloween, not a nasty one!

Little Things Can Make A Big Difference #littlethings campaign launched this week

#littlethings is a new mental health and wellbeing social marketing campaign from the HSE’s National Office for Suicide Prevention, and created in partnership with over 20 partner organisations was launched earlier this week on Monday, 20th October 2014.

The campaign has three messages to share:

1. We all experience life’s storms – the day to day dips that are an ordinary, everyday part of life

2. There are things that you can do for yourself and others that will have a positive impact on how you feel, and how you cope

3. You can find out more about the #littlethings and about mental wellbeing on yourmentalhealth.ie, or call the Samaritans on 116123 for a listening ear.

The Stories:
As part of the campaign, three generous people have shared their experience of life’s storms, and what #littlethings worked for them in getting through those tough times. Úna, Robert and Alan’s stories have been animated into 40’ TV and Radio adverts and will be widely shared throughout the campaign.

Gateway WRAPPERs on the airwaves... WRAP for Radio on Newstalk FM this weekend - tune in Sat 7am and Sun 10am or catch up with the podcast after the show

Gateway WRAP group met with Victoria Enright earlier in the summer to discuss wrap and their experiences of recovery for a Newstalk series on WRAP in Ireland.  Details below:
This year, to mark WHO World Mental Health Awareness Week, Producer Victoria Enright travels throughout Ireland to track the changing face of our society’s Mental Health culture. ‘WRAP Radio’ - Ireland’s Journey’, is a broadcast which seeks to challenge our mindsets and tune us into being a WRAP Nation; a society, where, when we hear the word mental, we don’t think crazy.
WRAP is the Wellness Recovery Action Programme, which was designed by creator, Mary Ellen Copeland, PhD, and is currently being quietly and successfully rolled out throughout Ireland. In ‘WRAP Radio’ - Ireland’s Journey’, Producer Victoria Enright takes an inside look at how WRAP translates into Irish people’s everyday lives. In essence, WRAP Radio, is a Wellness Toolbox. An Operation Transformation for the Mind - or a Head-Check if you will ... Most importantly, ‘WRAP Radio’ drives home the message of Hope to the very many persons whose hearts have broken open.
Made with the support of Genio, (Genio.ie) and The Copeland Center; (copelandcenter.com), ‘WRAP Radio’ - The Journey’ - is a Multi-Generational, National Conversation; travelling from Tipp to Clare, South to Limerick, West to Mayo, Midlands; Mullingar & Portlaoise and back to Gateway Dublin and the big two - SJOG, St John Of God's and SPUH, St Patrick’s University Hospital.
Individuals will explain just what the experience was like to create His or Her Wellness Toolbox - how was it for them - the Pre and Post WRAP of it all - the journey of ‘WRAP’ and because of it, in real and practical terms, the difference it has made in their lives.
  • Portlaoise Mother, Kate says; without ‘WRAP,’ she doesn’t know where her family would be. Her son no longer suffers in silence. As a mother, she recognises the signs pre triggers and changes her behaviour accordingly. She no longer panics because she knows how to access the supports and knows that they are not alone.
  • Orla is a Senior Occupational Therapist, for the Psychiatry for Later Life in Mullingar. She says WRAP works because it’s realistic. It’s all about taking personal responsibility.
  • 731 girls from the Loretto College in Mullingar are being urged to take the same message on board. Guidance Cllr, Miss Sinead Hyland says that ‘WRAP’ is no biggie. She says it’s simple. It’s a lifeskill. It works. She wants every school in Ireland to be running ‘WRAP’.
As a happy consequence of the making of ‘WRAP Radio’ -Ireland’s Journey’, Producer Victoria Enright has been trained up by Rona McBrierty, WRAP International Mentor for the Copeland Center to become a WRAP Facilitator herself. In addition, See Change have recently invited Victoria to become a new Ambassador, to aid in continuing the conversation of Mental Health in 21st Century Ireland.
 BROADCAST DETAILS:
‘WRAP Radio’ - Ireland’s Journey’ will be broadcast on Newstalk
106-108fm this weekend, Saturday 11th October at 7am, and Repeated at 10am on Sunday 12th October.
‘WRAP Radio’ - Ireland’s Journey, is part of the Autumn Season of Documentary on Newstalk.
‘WRAP Radio’ - Ireland’s Journey’, can also be listened to online at: www.newstalk.ie
Podcast available at: www.newstalk.ie/documentaryonnewstalk after the broadcast.
PRODUCER BIOG:
Victoria Enright, MA is VE Productions.
She is an award winning, International Radio Producer with 15 years broadcasting
experience. Original creator and executive producer of ‘The Wide Angle’, Newstalk
106.8FM, Ireland and documentary maker in Newfoundland & Toronto, Canada;

Happy World Mental Health Day... we get by with a little help from our friends

Happy 10th Birthday Gateway!

We had a fabulous 10th birthday yesterday.  Thanks to everyone involved for making it an unforgettable celebration and World Mental Health Week event.

Gateway Project's achievements promoting positive mental health and social inclusion over the last ten years are impressive. Our birthday celebrations yesterday were equally so with a whole range of fun, social and positive mental health activities that took place throughout the day.

We had live music from local musicians Davina Brady and Chris Maxey as well as Gateway Member Sean Cahil Accordion Player extraordinaire and member's singing.  We had a drumming circle with 8 members and Eddie from the NCH Outreach Programme (more in 2015 folks).  We heard from Gateway Member and Representative Oliver Duffy on his own journey and why Gateway is such an important community mental health resource and heard more members' thoughts on this from Ann Marie Mullen's What Gateway Means to Me box.  We heard the talented Nicholas Carroll, Gateway Member and poet with his delivery of a specially crafted poem for the occasion.  We had an Art Exhibition and interactive talk with Tim Lloyd and members.  We had a Creative Writing Exhibit with readings from Gateway writers. We had our interactive Wellness Tools Wall, Project Information and the launch of Gateway member's commemorative 10 year booklet.
We had lots and lots of party food and cake - mostly due to the kindness of local business people and friends particularly Supervalue Rathgar, Insomnia and Tesco.  We had lots of fun and danced off all the extra-but-worth-it-calories on the dancefloor with funky DJ Kelly in da house!

Thanks to everyone for their support, kindness and solidarity.  We have got here because of your help over the years.

Our Birthday Cake Wishes: core funding for another ten years!

Amazing day?  Yes, definitely!

And something for the weekend... Tesco Community Fund cheque received and some musical interludes from our kind local musicians due to play next Thursday as part of the birthday bash - enjoy

Thanks to Tesco Community Fund for including us in good causes charities.  We received €129.43 from the last round of voting from a total of €500 which was shared with other important local groups: St Mary's Day Care for the Elderly and the Women's Refuge all in Rathmines.

It was a good to have Gateway information available for every to see in Tesco so other people living locally could find us, as some new arrivals to the project remarked recently!

Thanks Tesco and thanks to the fabulous Michael D for dropping everything last minute to collect the cheque for us :)  We also chanced our arm at some donations for the birthday party next Thursday so hopefully Mick and Suzanne will help us out a bit further.  If anyone is interested in giving them a gentle reminder, please do drop in!

The money from the fund will go to support extra relaxation and meditation classes for members - yippee and thanks Carol for being such a great facilitator.

Have a lovely weekend everyone and remember to check out Joerg's Dublin Free Event guide to find out what's happening around the city for free.

Now some music for the weekend from our wonderful supporting musicians set to play at our birthday next Thursday:

The amazing Davina Brady - a modern day Janis Joplin in the making by the sounds of her...

Davina will be singing and playing to kick off the party from 12.30 at Parker Hill
Check her facebook page and like it / leave her a message of thanks :)

and the rockin Chris Maxey doing some band practice - check out his facebook page too and www.chrismaxeymusic.com
