Food and Health Project

Howdy all,

We were sent this information from Tracy Kelly at the Ballyfermot Partnership about several courses and workshops about healthy eating,
We’re passing these onto you in case it catches anybody’s interest!

Please see the mail below and the attached flyers for more information.

All the best,

John M.

FOOD AND HEALTH PROJECT
Healthy Food Made Easy Project/Healthy Heart/Cool Dude Programme/Weaning Workshops

As you may be aware the Healthy Food Made Easy Project has been in the Ballyfermot/Chapelizod Area for the last 10 years.  Our catchment area includes Ballyfermot/Chapelizod, Dublin 12,8,6 and Dublin 2. The project is a joint initiative between Ballyfermot/Chapelizod Partnership and the Health Promotion Service, Tallaght, HSE Dublin Mid–Leinster. The focus of the project is community nutrition; local people have been trained as Peer Leaders to support people in their community who are interested in healthier eating, particularly where cost is a consideration.

We now have four programmes to offer to participants:

Healthy Food Made Easy – The course has six sessions which include practical cooking as well as sensible suggestions and ideas.  The main goal is to help improve people’s access to good quality information that can be put into practice in everyday life. The course includes a visit from the Community Dietitian, Health Promotion service on the 5th week.

Cool Dude Programme - The Cool Dude programme was developed to educate children on the importance of a healthy diet and to help improve the nutritional knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of young people. This programme targets children aged 8 - 14 years.

Healthy Hearts Programme – A three week follow up programme to Healthy food made easy.  This programme has three sessions which focus on nutrition, stress management and physical activity.

Weaning Workshops – We now offer Weaning Workshops to help new parents with the transition to solid food during the weaning process for young babies.  This is a Free once off workshop.   Contact Tracy for more information.

We are now taking bookings for the next courses which will commence from April 2016 Onwards, booking early essential!   I have enclosed some booklets for your information.  Any community groups interested in hosting the Healthy Food Made Easy/healthy Hearts/Cool Dude programmes in the near future can contact me for more information.

Kind regards

UCC Student Visit, Wednesday 6th April 2-4pm.

Howdy folks,

On Wednesday 6th of April from 2 – 4pm we will be visited here at Gateway by some students who are studying the ‘Mental Health in the Community’ course being run by UCC. They are coming to us to learn about how Gateway Mental Health Association works, and to hear it from the people who make it work – The Members!

These guys are doing the same course that some of  our very own staff are currently studying, and of which our former project co-ordinator is now co-ordinating – so it’s safe to say that we’ve got a nice bunch of folks coming to see us! 

So, do any of you want to come along and give them your insight into how Gateway works so well? It’ll be a very informal occasion, nobody will be under any pressure to speak or do a speech or anything. Also, the students will be more than willing to answer any questions you may have about what they are learning on the course and how their workplaces support people with mental health difficulties.

Come say hello! It’s your project and you are the best ambassadors to let people know all about Gateway, we’d love to see as many of you as possible on the day!
There’ll be refreshments provided and as always we’ll have a bit of craic 

So if you would like to come along and talk to the students here at Gateway, please let us know as soon as possible.

Looking forward to seeing you here!

All the best,

John M.

Spring Surge Event

Howdy all,

Gateway member Rose S wants to organise a ‘Spring Surge’ event in Gateway – this will be a celebration of talent that exists within our great wee group!

We are aiming to host this event on either the 20th or 27th  of April. But before we can do anything, we need to know how many folks are interested in performing and contributing on the day.

What Rose wants specifically are people who will perform either poetry, music or singing. If you are interested in performing in or contributing to this event, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can get the ball rolling on getting it organised.

It sounds like a great idea and it should be fun to attend!

So, if you could let us know which date would suit and what kind of contribution you would like to make, that would be great!

Cheers folks,

John M.
